A film and discussion series, “Becoming American,” will be showing in select locations from Oct. 8 to Nov. 12.
A new film will be shown every week for six weeks. Each film aims to help inform the audience on the U.S. history of immigration and will open up a scholarly discussion about modern day issues on immigration.
Each documentary and discussion isĀ in juxtaposition to engage the audience to see how the current narrative and the historical narrative compare with one another.
This is an important topic in today’s society, seen through the increased backlash on immigration (both legal and illegal).
Viewing current headlines of major newspapers demonstrates the variety of people’s attitudes toward immigrants and immigration. For examples, “ICE says it needs a $1 billion funding boost to meet Trump’s aggressive deportation goals” and “Migrant Parents Separated From Their Children Will Get New Asylum Interviews” from The Washington Post and The New York Times, respectively, highlight the necessity to have a scholarly discussion.
