The New York Times recently published Richard Fausset’s profile of American Nazi Tony Hovater. The article received a wave of feedback with proponents of the piece arguing that it provided insight to modern day Nazis whereas others argued that it humanized Nazis and Nazism. Sophomore multiplatform journalism and history double major Ollie Gratzinger tackled the topic in this week’s The Duke newspaper.
“There’s validity to the criticism that the Times has faced in response to this article, being that its purpose still remains somewhat unclear,” writes Gratzinger. “Does it aim to humanize a Nazi? Or does it strive to feature the eerie notion that evil, sometimes, looks like a newlywed’s smiling face?”
